Prayer in the Upside Down Kingdom
Introduction to 8 Weeks of Reading Scripture and Prayer
Prayer draws us into the very heart of God. In the quiet of listening and the honesty of conversation, He shapes our understanding of who He is and our trust in His goodness grows deeper.
Prayer is a faith experience. Prayer is an intimate experience. Prayer is a holy experience. At times, prayer feels hard and laborious. At other times, it is exciting and life-giving. Prayer can be quiet or loud, private or communal. It may flow from travail and relentless intercession, from desperation, grief, or disappointment. It may rise from gratitude, joy, and expectation—or even from the mystery of not knowing what to say. Yet in all seasons, we must pray.
Scripture calls us to pray in all things and in every circumstance (Philippians 4:6–7; 1 Thessalonians 5:17; Ephesians 6:18; Colossians 4:2; Romans 12:12). We are invited to lean into prayer for ourselves, our families, our churches, our communities, our leaders, our nation, and our world. We are called to cry out for God’s kingdom to come and His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Jesus taught His disciples to pray that very prayer, reminding us that the purposes of heaven are brought near through the petitions of God’s people. What a high calling—that our obedience in prayer becomes the means by which hope is born where there was none, hearts once hardened now worship, the broken find healing, and the lost return home.
This 8-week daily Scripture reading plan is an invitation to enter that high calling. Together, we will explore the heart and character of God in prayer, discover what the Bible teaches about the one who prays, and learn to engage in the upside-down kingdom. Step into this journey with open hands and expectant hearts—the God who hears prayer is waiting to meet you.
This plan is for anyone who wants to grow in prayer. You are invited to join us whether you have been praying for decades or have just begun this journey.
Each week has a theme with prompts related to the topic, five days of scripture reading, and a place to take notes. Each day’s reading will take no more than 5 minutes.
