Week 4 - Hear
October 5, 2025
If you want that splendid power in prayer, you must remain in loving, living, lasting, conscious, practical, abiding union with the Lord Jesus Christ. Charles Spurgeon
I had a professor, Rob McCorkle, whose life mantra was “life is in the voice.” As we pray, we must be attuned to the voice of God, being able to distinguish between our own voice and thoughts and the only one that matters, God’s. This is why we began week one just going, making time to get away and focus on God. Week two helped us to get out of our own way readying our hearts to hear from God as we set everything else aside to worship Him. Week three began the process of clearing our hearts of things that get in the way of hearing God through confession. When we do these things consistently and read the Word of God with expectant and open hearts, we have put ourselves into a position to hear the voice that gives life.
We listen so we know how to pray. In this way, we take a person for whom we have great concern, and we lay them at the feet of Jesus asking Him how we should pray. When we hear and pray accordingly, we are literally joining Jesus in praying for that person (Romans 8.26-27). Even if we are unsure about what to pray, we can stay engaged in the Spirit knowing that Jesus is interceding for exactly what the person needs. Imagine the power of praying what Jesus is praying. Imagine being in a prayer meeting that Jesus is leading!
This is His desire for us. While it is not always easy to distinguish between our own thoughts and ideas and God’s, it is possible. He has ensured that we have a way to know His will and His thoughts. That’s why we practice every time we sit down to spend time with Jesus. As we go, worship, confess, and read His Word, we become more attuned to His character and His desires for people, our community, and the world. In this way, we can learn to distinguish His good and perfect will and join Him in praying for that. When we are praying His will we can be assured our prayer will be answered.
Continue to begin your prayer time with the prayer and instructions on the How to Start page. Be sure you have spent time in worship. Finally, ask Holy Spirit to help you hear from Him and take time to listen.
Read the scripture for the day in your favorite translation. Read it silently first, then read it aloud. Read it slowly. What phrase, verses, or passage stands out to you. What does it say about God’s character? Are you learning something about yourself or the situation that weighs heavy on your heart? How might God be praying right now? Write what you are hearing.
